ACNE Goes Out To Sea

The show itself opened with a rendition of “Till Havs [Out To Sea]”, and with that the cruise ship which was the ACNE Spring 2014 collection set sail…or was it more of a fishing boat.

Designer Jonny Johansson morphed nautical references with ACNE’s infamously cool ways, in some very ‘next level sailor boy’ style dressing. Navy matchstick thin horizontal strips lined beige pants and blazer’s, alongside drawstring-hemmed denim tunic dresses. Subtle sea-faring touches could also be spotted within the silver anchors that dotted a navy pantsuit, but it’s the mirage of the good ol’ navy and white combo that we can’t get over.

After all, ACNE’s trip to the seaside is rather fitting considering the geographical position of Sweden, no?

Le Smoking

It seems that from Dior to Phoebe Philo’s Celine and even the new age Balenciaga, designers have been following suit (pun most definitely intened), with their take on the infamous ‘Le Smoking’ tux.

The ‘Le Smoking’ tuxedo suit came about in 1966, crafted by Yves Saint Laurent of course. Introduced at the peak of the womens movement, the liberating suit took off.  Sharp, strong and just austere enough; the suit was described by actress and muse Catherine Deneuve as being “virile and feminine at the same time.”

So this coming season we have masculine tailoring.

Tuxedo jackets that are worn on bare chests, donned as dresses, cropped and fixed at the waist. Take your pick.

Power Pencil Skirt

power skirt

Forget the power-suit, we’re talking power pencil skirts.

It may seem silly that we’re pulling up photos from the Burberry Fall 2013 runway, with the new season almost underway. But these skirts required some dire attention.

Doesn’t Karlie look fetching in that knee skimming patent red leather skirt?

Dubbed by us as the ‘power pencil skirt’, this piece is a definite game changer. Texture, colour, print, it’s all there! But as you can see we tend to gravitate to the much more dull colours of black and ‘salt and pepper’. We can’t help it.

Feeling Grey

Grey embodies much of the winter dullness we try to avoid (for the sake of our mental states), but when layered just right in fashion terms it becomes a bastion of elegance and sophistication.

Take this cover and editorial spread of the legendary baby-faced Sasha Pivovarova for example. Photographed by Josh Olins for The Last Magazine‘s , Sasha looks super cozy and none the less chic.

There is one rule with wearing any colour head-to-toe, and that is to play with texture. Layer all sorts of knits, and you will look smashing for sure. The knitted Alexander Wang hood-like piece has been an editorial hit, as well as the Celine wrap (taken to the next level) slate coloured jacket that we just can’t get out of our minds.

Above are some runway looks from Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander Wang, Christian Dior & Celine.

Since we’re on the topic of grey, I (Natalie) recently went on a whim and purchased this gorgeous salt and pepper toned “Brussels Jacket” by Nique. It reminds me of European winter, and psychologically makes me feel like I’m truly in Brussels (as it’s name suggests).GENERIC-TEMPLATE-2

Powder Pink

pink1We’ve never been really big on pink, at all. But, ever since Raf Simon’s last collection for Jil Sander, we can’t get over those gorgeous borderline-beige pinks.

There is something just so soft and delicate about the shade. And then you have the array of Valentino lace dresses which are singlehandedly enough to convert us back to powder pink.

Blush, coral and powder pinks are all terribly in for this coming season. So, treat your girly side to some gorgeous candy toned lace dresses and outwear.

a. Valentino “cotton blend lace detail dress with long sleeves”

b. Valentino “cotton-blend lace mini dress”

When All Else Fails

black tote…reach for a black shopper

We’re talking about the grandiose hybrid tote/shopper/structured handbag or whatever you choose to call it, and it has never looked quite as good. Nothing beats a good black leather shopper with golden hardware.

Note: it also has a certain ode to anonymity about it, escaping much of the it-bag-syndrome.

Apart from just making significant modifications to the name of the Saint Laurent house, Hedi Slimane made some changes to their range of classic bags. Firstly, as you can see within the last two bags (the bottom which is of the old style, and the slightly higher one which is of the new), Hedi replaced the regal, bold “Y” with the simple golden brand name of simply “Saint Laurent” of course.

Likewise, Victoria Beckham has also done the black-shopper thing very well with her self titled “Victoria” bags (oh can’t you just smell the vanity), and this one as pictured above is actually matte as welll, do double kudos to her design team.

a. Fendi “2 Jours medium tectured-leather shopper”

b. Givenchy “lucrezia medium tote”

c. Victoria Beckham “the victoria matte-leather tote”

d. Saint Laurent “classic duffle 6 leather bag”

Coats for Fall

coats street style Coats for Winter? Yes, we may as well have said ‘forals for Spring’, but that’s besides the point.

The Wool coat, the fur coat, the double-breasted coat, and the oversized ‘this is my boyfriend’s’ style coat. They are all in.

It’s practical, warm and big for this coming fall. It’s time to invest in that coat that will get you through this fall, and the next.

Birth Control or Birkenstocks

GENERIC-TEMPLATE-3To those like us whose Instagram newsfeed is brightened with the photographs and accompanying witty captions of Leandra Medine (otherwise known as the Man Repeller), you may recall her post on Birkenstocks, captioned simply with; “birth control or birkenstocks”.

We’re all for man repelling, but we cannot deal with the recent re-emergence of the Birkenstock. Let’s just say that no matter how much Vogue claims that they are back, we refuse to allow them into our fashion peripheries.

Leandra may thrive on the unsung joys of electing to wear ugly footwear, but we cannot. We will not.

And that means that we also unashamedly say “no” to Phoebe Philo’s fur-lined Birkenstock-esque slip-ons of the Spring 2013 Celine show.
